Playoff Format Thoughts

The 2024 NASCAR season is a wrap and we got a different Penske driver as our Champion this year. Congratulations to Mr. Joey Logano on an excellent drive! Those closing laps were tense! It was everything a NASCAR fan could hope for. All of the final four drivers finished in the top 10.

Now, let me fix the playoff format for you. It’s so simple!

Points

To get into the round of 16 it’s all about points. A win doesn’t lock you in. Points accumulated throughout the season do. I’ll admit I have no clue how many points a win gets you, but that could be adjusted slightly to make a win more important than second place. E.G. if it’s worth 10 today, make it 20.

Why Points?

Indeed! It would get rid of the dumb win and you’re in rule. I like Harrison Burton and Chase Briscoe but winning a single race may have left them out. That’s ok because it would reward driver consistency over pure wins.

Post Season

Keep the round of 16 and eight the same. Three races in each round. That’s fine. Same points system as the regular season, you have to race your way in based on points.

Championship Four

Expand the Championship to three races. Yes, three. The same points system would be applied here as it was in the regular season. In the event of a tie, use the regular season standings as a tie breaker.

Again, Why?

Because this system would reward the most talented drivers by eliminating the “win and you’re in rule” and reward consistency and put the best talent on the track in the playoffs.

You’re welcome.

Alpine and Mercedes

Formula 1

Alpine have secured a deal with Mercedes to run the German manufacturer’s power unit from 2026 until at least the end of 2030.

I wish there were more power unit providers, not fewer. Red Bull and Ford are working on one but I’d love to see Chevy or Cadillac in the mix.

Engine Manufacturers

F1 has the following engine providers:

  • Ferrari
  • Mercedes
  • Honda
  • Renault

I know Ford is doing a deal with Red Bull Racing to build engines but I’m not familiar with the details.

It would be nice to see the only American F1 team — Haas F1 Team — run an American built engine. Ford, Chevy, Dodge, or Cadillac would be great candidates and I have no doubt could provide competitive power for Haas.

IndyCar has the following engine providers

  • Honda
  • Chevrolet

I’m surprised Ford and Toyota don’t have a presence here. A European manufacturer like Mercedes, Ferrari, or Renault would make for a wonderful addition to IndyCar.

NASCAR has the following engine providers

  • Ford
  • Chevrolet
  • Toyota

I would love to see the return of Dodge to the Cup Series and the Truck Series. They have a classic American muscle car in the Charger and Ram trucks are known for power and durability. They were there once, time for a return.

How about sneaking in a European manufacturer like Mercedes or Ferrari?

Why not add Honda to the mix? They already produce a V8 for boats. Why not NASCAR?

Bell Rides the Wall

Jeff Gluck of The Teardown thinks the penalty levied against Christopher Bell for riding the wall is controversial. It’s not.

Bell, while he didn’t ride it for long, I think he made it easy to call because he powered up the car while he was against the wall. He eventually came off the wall at the end of turn four, but he did ride the wall.

It seems Bell could’ve laid off the throttle, come off the wall, then throttle it up again.

See y’all in Phoenix!

It’s Blaney!

Wild race! I fully expected Larson to win and to see Byron be the final entry in the Final Four was nice to see so we have Ford, Chevy, and Toyota in Phoenix! 🥳

NASCAR Cup Final Four

I had a totally different final four earlier in the playoffs. I was hoping Truex was going to pull a rabbit out of a hat but, alas, that didn’t happen.

Here’s my adjusted Final Four, had to share it, but it’s all blown up. 🤣

    Kyle Larson
    Denny Hamlin
    William Byron
    Christopher Bell

What a mess!

Adjusted, adjusted final four!

  • Joey Logano
  • Tyler Reddick
  • Christopher Bell
  • Denny Hamlin

Yep, I’m riding the number 11 to the bitter end! This man has to win a cup series.

I’m pulling for you, Denny! Now get out there and win at Martinsville!

Half Hearted Hamlin ❤️

By the title you can see I’m gonna be a little critical of Mr. Denny Hamlin, but not about how the man races. I just watched him pour his heart out to win at Homestead and finish a heart breaking third place. On any normal race weekend that would’ve been a good finish but it’s playoff time baby! Denny needs a win to get to the final four, but that’s not what I want to talk about.

What I want to talk about is this, why doesn’t he drive for his own team? I feel like that makes him a half-hearted owner. Sure, he’s taking a risk as an owner but he’s not putting it all on the line. He’s not there, on the track, as the team leader, proving to his younger drivers week in and week out how to win. To me it shows a lack of commitment to 23XI.

If Denny wants 23XI to be the best team in NASCAR he should leave JGR and put all his eggs in the 23XI basket.

It seems to be working for RFK with Brad Kaeslowski all in as an owner and driver.

Come on Denny! Take that plunge and drive 23XI right to the top! And while you’re at it go win a Championship for 23XI!

P.S. You’ll go down as one of the greats, Denny, no matter which team you finish with. Now, go win a title!

Good Old Logano

If you watched the South Point 400 from beautiful Las Vegas, Nevada, yesterday you were probably as shocked as I was to see Joey Logano pull off an improbable win.

Not because the guy doesn’t have what it takes, because he clearly does, but because Christopher Bell is equally as skilled and he had the best car yesterday.

All it took was a ballsy call from Crew Chief Paul Wolfe to put Logano in victory lane. As I said earlier, Joey has the chops, but that strategy call was brilliant and just happened to work out.

One of four drivers is now locked in and has the huge advantage of being able to prepare their car for Championship Sunday in Phoenix November 10.

Who’s gonna join him?

McLeod to race in 2025

The Racing Experts

B.J. McLeod plans to continue part-time racing in his No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports entry in NASCAR‘s top series in 2025 and beyond.

I like B.J. McLeod. I love speedway racing and B.J. seems to love them too. Heck, the man lead laps at the Daytona 500 this year.

I’d love to see him win one. 😃
