The 2024 NASCAR season is a wrap and we got a different Penske driver as our Champion this year. Congratulations to Mr. Joey Logano on an excellent drive! Those closing laps were tense! It was everything a NASCAR fan could hope for. All of the final four drivers finished in the top 10.
Now, let me fix the playoff format for you. It’s so simple!
Points
To get into the round of 16 it’s all about points. A win doesn’t lock you in. Points accumulated throughout the season do. I’ll admit I have no clue how many points a win gets you, but that could be adjusted slightly to make a win more important than second place. E.G. if it’s worth 10 today, make it 20.
Why Points?
Indeed! It would get rid of the dumb win and you’re in rule. I like Harrison Burton and Chase Briscoe but winning a single race may have left them out. That’s ok because it would reward driver consistency over pure wins.
Post Season
Keep the round of 16 and eight the same. Three races in each round. That’s fine. Same points system as the regular season, you have to race your way in based on points.
Championship Four
Expand the Championship to three races. Yes, three. The same points system would be applied here as it was in the regular season. In the event of a tie, use the regular season standings as a tie breaker.
Again, Why?
Because this system would reward the most talented drivers by eliminating the “win and you’re in rule” and reward consistency and put the best talent on the track in the playoffs.
